Overview

  • Levocetirizine, the R-enantiomer of cetirizine dihydrochloride has pharmacodynamically and pharmacokinetically favourable characteristics, including a fast onset of action, high bioavailability, high affinity for and occupancy of the H1-receptor.
  • Levocetirizine has several documented anti-inflammatory effects that are observed at clinically relevant concentrations that may enhance its therapeutic benefit

Pharmacological classification

  • Antihistaminics, Levocetirizine, the (R) enantiomer of cetirizine, is a histamine H1 receptor antagonist. 

Mechanism of action

  • Levocetirizine selectively inhibits histamine H1 receptors. This action prevents histamine from activating this receptor and causing effects like smooth muscle contraction, increased permeability of vascular endothelium, histidine uptake in basophils, stimulation of cough receptors, and stimulation of flare responses in the nervous system.

Pack size 

  • 10s: tablets are packed in silver-coloured Alu/Alu blister strips containing 10 tablets, are packed in an outer carton tablet box.

  • 30s: tablets are packed in white HDPE containers in a pack size of 30 tablets

Indications

  • Allerway 5 is indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with the following allergic conditions:

    • Seasonal allergic rhinitis

    • Perennial allergic rhinitis 

  • Allerway 5 may be prescribed for children (6 years and older), adolescents and adults. 

Dosage

  • Adults and adolescents 12 - 64 years of age:
    Take 1 tablet (5 mg) once daily in the evening. Do not take more than 1 tablet (5 mg) in 24 hour.    

  • Children 6 - 11 years:
    Take 1 tablet (5 mg) once daily in the evening.Do not take more than 1 tablet (5 mg) in 24 hours.
